Overview of Responsibilities
The City requires attorneys to review contracts, draft ordinances, advise department heads and the Office of the Mayor, attend Council meetings, and prosecute and defend suits where the City is a party to litigation or arbitration proceedings.
The City needs broad legal expertise in such diverse areas of the law as condemnation and demolition proceedings, annexations, prosecution of ordinance violations, negotiation and drafting of contracts, arbitration of grievances with six collective bargaining units, TIF districts, zoning matters, real estate liens, collections, drafting of ordinances and resolutions, insurance, municipal law, tort defense, intergovernmental agreements, workers compensation, employee rights and more.
Mission Statement
The City Attorney and the Assistant City Attorneys are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council, with the goal of providing the excellent legal services necessary for a progressive City.
Biography
The City Attorney of Granite City is Brian Konzen. Mr. Konzen has practiced law in downtown Granite City for 23 years, with the Firm of Lueders, Robertson and Konzen. He was appointed an Assistant City Attorney in 1987, and served continuously as an Assistant until appointed City Attorney in May, 2005. Mr. Konzen has served Granite City as a staff attorney under three different Mayors, five Police Chiefs, five Fire Chiefs, and three Street Superintendents.
