Recycling

According to the EPA, the average U.S. citizen produced 4.4 pounds of waste per day during 2000. This is the equivalent of over 1600 pounds of trash per year per person or more than 220 tons of waste being generated each year.

We know we should recycle to save trees, cut waste and use less energy. Our goal is to make is easier for Granite City residents to recycle their waste.

Recycling centers:
All of the Granite City Elementary Schools have paper recycling bins. There is also a recycle bin in the Schnucks parking lot. There you can take cardboard, paper, cans and plastics. Everything should be clean and boxes must be broken down. They are all open 24 hours a day.

To recycle used printer cartridges and cell phones
Granite City High School is collecting empty ink-jet cartridges, laser printer toner cartridges and discarded cell phones. They can be dropped off at the Granite City High School Guidance Department or any other participating partner. Recycling Partners can be easily identified by their “Green Warrior” decal. If you are a business and would like to partner with the High School, please contact Pam Cook at pam.cook@gcsd9.net or 451-5808 ext. 2537 for more information.

To recycle used motor oil and auto batteries:
You can usually take them to any: Amoco full service station or Auto Zone. To recycle oil only: Jiffy Lube, Rapid Lube or Valvolene. To recycle batteries only: K-mart or Wal-mart.

To dispose of old paint:
On the second Saturday of the month (May-October) from 8am-12pm The Madison Public Works building on River’s Edge accepts old paint cans. If your paint cans are empty and dry, you can dispose of them in your regular trash.

Curbside recycling program:
Waste Management provides a curbside recycle service. A bin is provided to recycle cans, plastics and paper. This service is provided twice a month. Visit www.wastemanagement.com or call (800) 989-2783 for pick up dates in your area. Bins can be picked up free of charge at the Granite City Street Department office located at 2301 Adams St. The following items are accepted: Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, corrugated cardboard, telephone directories, aluminum cans, tin/steel food cans, glass bottles and jars, #1 plastics and #2 plastics.

For yard waste
(city residents only-ID required): The leaf drop off area is available. This is located at 25th Street and the railroad tracks. Call the Granite City Street Department at (618) 452-6222 for more information.
