The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis

The Granite City Police Department is a member of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis. The Major Case Squad is a multi-jurisdictional homicide unit serving Eastern Missouri and Western Illinois. Currently there are 130 agencies with over 400 investigators. The Squad can be utilized by any agency, if they have a homicide in their city, and make the appropriate request. The Granite City Police Department has 8 members in this unit:

Metro East Auto Theft Task Force (MEATTF)
The Metro East Auto Theft Task Force is a Multi-Jurisdictional task force comprised of several police officers from several local police departments throughout Madison and St. Clair Counties, including the Illinois State Police and Secretary of State Police. The purpose of the task force is to combat auto thefts throughout the area. The task force’s multi-jurisdictional, cooperative approach maximizes its ability to effectively investigate and assist in the prosecution of auto theft related cases throughout the area.

The Granite City Police Department became a member of the task force in 2006, and currently has one officer assigned to the unit working in an undercover capacity. This officer is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of local auto theft related cases.

Metro East Cyber Crimes Task Force
The Granite City Police Department is a member of the Metro East Cyber Crimes Task Force. The task force is made up of local and federal law enforcement officers. Those participating in the task force are the FBI, and several local officers from Madison, St. Clair, and Monroe counties. The mission of the task force is to combat computer crimes throughout the area as well as the country. A special interest is placed upon internet crimes against children, such as child pornography and solicitation of children for sex crimes. The task force also targets internet fraud and identity theft as well as computer intrusion. The Granite City Police Department currently has two officers assigned to the task force. The officer assigned is Detective Ken Wojtowicz and Patrol.

Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (M.E.G.S.I.)
The Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois, also referred to as MEGSI, is a multi-jurisdictional drug task force. MEGSI currently has fourteen police officers assigned to the task force, which covers Madison County, St. Clair County, and Monroe County. The purpose of MEGSI is to combat the unlawful trafficking, sales, distribution, and possession of illegal narcotics. The fourteen officers all work in covert capacities to maximize criminal case preparation and the prosecution of those cases. The illegal drugs frequently encountered in the Metropolitan area are cannabis, cocaine, crack cocaine, and methamphetamine.

The Granite City Police Department has been a member in the task force since its inception in the late 1970’s. The Granite City Police Department currently has one officer assigned to the MEGSI unit working in an undercover capacity with the responsibility of conducting long term narcotics investigations throughout the Granite City area.

The mission of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations, involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States; and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets.
