Divisions

Detectives
The Granite City Police Department’s Detective Division has a Detective Commander, Detective lieutenant, and eight Detectives. The Detective Division investigates a variety of crimes including, but not limited to Homicide, Armed DetRobbery, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Sexual Assault/Abuse, Arson, Residential Burglary, Vehicle Burglary, Thefts, Identity Theft, Computer Crimes, and Forgery.

The Detective Division is responsible for the investigation and prosecution concerning felony offenses related to all crimes against persons and crimes against property. The Detective Division operates with a high degree of integrity and pride aiming toward a successful conclusion to each investigation. The Detective Division works in concert with the Granite City Patrol Division to Identify and apprehend those responsible for committing criminal acts within the City of Granite City.

Nuisance Abatement Team (NAT)
The Nuisance Abatement Team is a proactive unit that is made up of officers from the Service and Patrol Divisions of the Granite City Police Department. This unit is used to aggressively identify, abate, deter, and prevent the recurrence of public nuisances within the City of Granite City. The Nuisance Abatement Team has also partnered with the Police Departments in Pontoon Beach and Venice to effectively abate nuisances, instead of simply forcing them into someone else’s neighborhood.

Complaints of illegal drug or prostitution activity within a neighborhood or specific location should be directed to the NAT office at 618-876-9027 Ext. 112.

Special Response Team (SRT)
The Granite City Police Department recognizes that the presence of a highly trained, highly skilled police tactical unit SRThas been shown to substantially reduce the risk of injury or loss of life to citizens, police officers, and suspects. Also, recognizing that a well managed “team” response to critical incidents usually results in their successful resolution, it is the intent of the Granite City Police Department to provide a highly trained and skilled tactical team as a resource for the Granite City Police Department in the handling of critical incidents.

Services

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)
The primary mission of the DARE program is to provide children with the information and skills they need to live drug-and-violence-free lives. The DARE curriculum is intended to equip kids with the tools that will enable them to avoid negative influences and instead, allow them to focus on their strengths and potential. Additionally, it establishes positive relationships between students, law enforcement, teachers, parents, and other community leaders. Every youngster should have the opportunity to grow-up healthy, safe, secure, and equipped with the skills needed to succeed.

School Resource Officer
The purpose of the School Resource Officer Program is to provide an on duty uniformed police officer on the campuses of the Granite City High School, both Coolidge and Grigsby Middle Schools and Coordinated Youth Services during the school year. The Granite City Police Department recognizes the potential outstanding benefits to the citizens of Granite City, and particularly the students of the public school system, by providing a more safe and secure campus which in turn promotes a better learning environment. The school resource officer, working together with school officials, will assist in the enforcement of local and state laws; criminal investigations; conflict resolution and mediation; eradication of drugs, weapons, and violence from the campuses; and promote positive programs within the schools.
