Firefighter/ Paramedics

The firefighter/paramedics of the Granite City Fire Department are some of the most highly trained emergency service professionals in the region. The department requires that all firefighters be certified at the Firefighter Basic level. However, an overwhelming majority of the department’s fifty-five personnel have obtained the Advanced Firefighter Technician level as well. Due to the unique hazards that our community presents, many of the members have also progressed to the title of Technician in Hazardous Materials, Confined Space Rescue, Rope Rescue, Swift Water, Rescue Swimmer and Ice Rescue Operations. After a fire occurs, we are proud to have highly specialized Arson Investigators on staff, who can quickly determine the cause and origin of a fire.

Medical emergencies require quick reaction and special knowledge and skills. The Granite City Fire Department is proud to provide our citizens with four advanced life support ambulances. Because of the high frequencies of these calls, it is crucial to require every firefighter to also be certified as a Paramedic. Paramedics are equipped and trained to, in effect; bring an emergency room to an accident scene or into a home. This allows us to provide aggressive advanced life saving techniques as soon as we arrive.   The Paramedic certification assures that every member of the department is certified in CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and ITLS (International Trauma Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and PEPP (Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals.) All of this training comes in addition to the many hours of rigorous preparation and instruction required annually for every firefighter/paramedic.
