GCFD PERSONNEL/CAREERS

Firefighters & Paramedics

The firefighters/paramedics of the Granite City Fire Department are some of the most highly trained fire suppression professionals in the region. To begin with, the department also requires that all firefighters be certified at the Firefighter II level. However, more than half of the squad’s 55+ members have proceeded to advance to the Firefighter III level as well. Approximately the same number of our men and women are HazMat Operation Certified, with several of those having the even higher, HazMat Technician Certification.

In addition to having Firefighter II Certification, one of the Fire Departments’ newest personnel policies is that each and every firefighter must also be fully trained and certified as a paramedic, so that they can better serve the citizens of our fine town. This allows the City to have a dramatically reduced cost compared to privately owned ambulance services. Requiring this training assures that every member of the company is certified in CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and BTLS (Basic Trauma Life Support). Many members of our team, however, have exceeded these requirements, having earned certifications in ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), PEPP (Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals) among other qualifications. All of this training comes in addition to the many hours of rigorous preparation and instruction required annually for every paramedic on the team.
