Workforce Characteristics
In February 2007, a report was released by WorkforceSt.louis2.0, a group that is administered by the Chicago-based Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, which highlighted the strengths of the St. Louis area workforce. The study found that the St. Louis companies surveyed reported a pre-tax profit of $1.34 for every dollar invested in workforce compensation and benefit costs. This is more than 15 percent higher than the national benchmark of $1.13. Companies in the St. Louis area also reported an average voluntary turnover rate of 4.8, which is significantly lower than the national average of 7.5 percent. These results, however, come as very little surprise to those that have lived in the St. Louis region for any length of time, as one of the most common characteristics of our workers is a hard-working Midwestern work ethic.
