General Information

Abuse

Owners are required to properly provide pets with food, water, shelter and veterinary care. It is against the law to abuse or abandon an animal.

Granite City has two animal welfare groups that offer care for abandoned, injured or abused animals:

                    Granite City APA
                    (618) 931-7030

                    Metro East Humane Society
                    (618) 656-4405

If you suspect that an animal is being abused, you may report it to the Granite City Police Department by calling (618) 877-6111

Leash Laws

Dogs and cats must be leashed whenever off the owner’s property. Unrestrained animals will be picked up and taken to the City’s animal control facility located at 2900 Missouri Ave. If unclaimed within seven days, animals will be put up for adoption or humanely disposed of in accordance with state law.

Licenses

The City of Granite City does not currently issue or require a separate City animal license. However, all animals are required to wear an up-to-date rabies tag at all times by City and County ordinance. Click on the link below for more information on obtaining a rabies license.

Found a Pet?

If you have found a lost pet and have brought it to one of the local shelters for public display and would like to do something more to help, consider the following:

     •  Post "Found" posters in the area where you found the pet. Click here for a found poster template (in
Adobe Acrobat format) that you can download and print. You can add your specific information and then
             reproduce it!

     •  Look through the Lost and Found log at the shelter. When you review the lost section, take note of any
descriptions that match that of the pet you found.

     •  Look in your neighborhood for any "Lost" posters that have a description matching that of the pet you
            have found.

     •  Look in the classified section of the newspaper under "Lost and Found." An owner may have placed an
             inquiry there.

     •  Check with your local newspaper about placing a "Lost and Found" ad in the classifieds; many papers
provide this service free of charge.

     •  If there are any popular "Dog Parks" or leash-free areas nearby, place a "Found" poster there.
