Virgil Kambarian
Ward 2 Councilmember
Dr. Virgil N. Kambarian Jr. is a lifelong resident of Granite City. Councilman Kambarian was first elected to office in 1989 and served for a single term. In 2001 he was elected to a two year term as an alderman. After which, he was re-elected to office in 2003 and again in 2007, both for four year terms. Virgil currently serves as a Public School Administrator for Granite City High School. Being an avid promoter of education, Dr. Kambarian himself has obtained both his Bachelor’s and Masters of Science degrees in Education (from Eastern & Southern Illinois Universities, respectively) as well as his Doctorate in Education which he received from St. Louis University. During his college career, he earned a multitude of honors and was accepted into multiple honor societies, including: Pi Sigma Alpha (Political Science Honorary), Phi Alpha Theta (Int’l History Honor Society), Kappa Delta Pi (Education Honor Society), Phi Delta Kappa (College Honor Society) and Who’s Who in American Colleges & Universities (1970-71).
When he is not studying, Alderman Kambarian enjoys spending his time reading and traveling.
He and his wife, Lois, a teacher at Wilson School, have two wonderful children. Their oldest, Erik, is a Lt. at Godfrey Fire Department, as is a Lt. in the Naval Reserve. Kristin, their youngest is a Special Education teacher for the visually impaired in Metropolis, IL.
The three issues that are most important to Alderman Kambarian are as follows:
1. Public Safety: Commitment to have the best equipped and professionally trained fire and police departments
2. Finance: Be conservative with City finances. Provide for efficient and effective use of City resources to maintain a high quality of life in our community.
3. Development: Continue to promote the development of business and residential areas
