Brenda Whitaker
Ward 5 Councilmember
Councilwoman Whitaker is a lifelong resident of Granite City and graduate of Granite City High School South. She is a former steelworker at U.S. Steel (formerly Granite City Steel) and is currently the owner of the Garden Gate Tea Room which is located in the City’s Historic Lincoln Place Neighborhood. Ms. Whitaker’s greatest interests include gardening, cooking and the theater. Councilwoman Whitaker was first elected in 2005 and again in 2009, running on the platform of renewing the downtown and Lincoln Place neighborhoods. Upon being elected, she was appointed as chairwoman of the Downtown Rehabilitation Committee and has also become a member of the Planning & Zoning and the Cable TV, Intergovernmental, Legal & Legislative Committees.
Alderwoman Whitaker believes that the City must “continue the move in the positive direction set forth by this Administration by focusing on Economic Development & Quality of Life issues.”
Councilwoman Whitaker’s current term will expire in 2011.
